Powerscourt is a house/estate just outside the village of Enniskerry, Co. Wicklow. Although the house looks very impressive from the outside, it was gutted by a fire in 1974. In fact, I remember visiting the gardens in the early 1990s and seeing a tree growing out of the top of the house. Since then, the interior of the house has been somewhat restored but not to what it was previously. It’s now a visitor’s centre/restaurant/shopping centre. You can see its interior in Google Streeview should you be curious.
Anyway, it’s not for the house that visitors flock to Powerscourt. It’s for its extensive gardens and beautiful scenery. The Italian Garden nearest to the house is perhaps the best known but the grounds also boast a Japanese Garden, a viewing tower, a pet cemetery and other gardens.
